Strong detergent eat the color, make saree fade. Always wash in cold water, not hot water, because hot water shrink fabric. Also never rub saree very hard, just dip and squeeze slowly. After wash, how you dry saree also matter. Many woman put saree in full hot sun. That is wrong. Sun take away the shine, color become dull. Always dry saree in shade, maybe inside room near window or under fan. If you must dry outside, then put saree inside out, so sunlight not directly fall on design and embroidery.
Also never hang heavy saree by thin rope, it will stretch fabric. Better to dry saree flat on bed or on clean cloth. Drying saree flat also keep embroidery safe and no crease mark. When drying, keep saree away from dust and pollution. Dust can stick on saree and spoil look.
Iron is also important. If you iron saree wrong, you burn fabric or make line mark. Always check iron temperature. For silk saree use low heat. For cotton saree use medium heat. For georgette and chiffon, better to keep thin cotton cloth on top then iron, so saree not burn. Never sprinkle water directly on saree while ironing, it will leave water spot. Instead, use steam iron if you have. Iron saree in clean and dry condition only. Wet or dirty saree get stain or smell after ironing.
Fold Saree in Right Way:
How you fold saree also decide how long it live. Never fold saree in same line again and again, because that fold become weak and tear. Always change fold line after some time. Also do not fold saree in very tight way. Keep it little loose so fabric breathe. For silk saree, keep butter paper or muslin cloth between fold to avoid sticking. Storage is very big point. Do not pull saree when walking, walk carefully. If something stuck in saree, open slowly, do not pull. Also avoid perfume spray directly on saree. Perfume have alcohol, it will damage color. Spray perfume on skin, not on saree. If saree is very costly, like silk, banarasi, kanjivaram, or with heavy embroidery, then do not wash at home. Best is dry clean. Yes it cost some money, but it save saree for many year. Always give to trusted dry cleaner. If you want saree to last long, do not wear same saree again and again. Rotate with other saree. Give every saree some rest. If you wear daily one only saree, it will get old fast. Sometimes saree kept in box for long time smell bad. Best way is to take saree out, put in air for 1 , 2 hour, not sun, just air. This remove smell and make saree fresh again. If saree get small tear, or border come out, repair fast. Do not wait for big damage. Small stitching will save saree for long time.
